French Ormolu Mantle Clock by Japy Freres

Stories about clocks, time, folklore, the whys and hows of time keeping and restoration. There were two general styles of antique French clocks during this period. One was known as “Boulle”, which refers to a clock cased in tortoiseshell and inlaid with brass, pewter, porcelain, and ivory. The second type was called “religieuse”, in which brass and pewter overlays were set in ebony veneers on oak. During the Regency period from roughly to , bracket clocks, which had been popular a century before, came back into prominence.

Mar 24,  · Re: Japy Freres & Cie, got this in families estate I will take some more and post later. The nuts holding the exterior bronze castings are all somewhat differently shaped made of cast bronze.

An imaginative inventor of all sorts of machines, he began his career as a watchmaker. He was the second born of a large family of twelve children. From childhood, he was introduced to craft activitiesand learned to live in a structured and supportive business environment. Jacques Japy thus placed his son in French school or “gymnasium” where he received an excellent education. At age 17, he returned to Beaucourt to spend two years working in the workshop of his father.

The parts were then collected and mounted into a piece by an ‘assembler’. Once the movement was assembled, it was then sent to a ‘dresser’ who would in turn mount it into case – be it a small one or an elaborate brass plated mantle clock complete with mythological figures. Frederic Japy radically changed the way clocks were produced. Japy Trademark Japy’s plant revolutionized manufacturing. The number of steps and operations were reduced by half.

All parts could be assembled into a finished product on-site instead of the previous sub-assemblies and the machines could be operated by a less-skilled worker. There are few French carriage clocks in existence that do not have Japy enamel dials on them. Japy’s plants continued to produce clocks in many styles and at the higher priced levels. However, his sons’ sons did not inherit the creative and inventive spirit of their fathers and grandfather and by the early ‘s, many of the the businesses were sold off and the manufacturing was dismantled.

Something about the ornate yet solemn gothic style seems particularly suited to instruments which measure the passing of time. Until recently, clocks were precious and expensive items and it was very appropriate to dress them up in stylish little reliquary-style cases. Additionally, like churches or crypts which were frequently constructed in the same style , clocks betoken a world which transcends human understanding or control.

Nineteenth century clockmakers particularly relished the gothic aesthetic so most of the clocks below are gothic-revival era objects from England, France, or Germany. However clock makers from before the 19th century also looked to medieval sacred conventions when crafting their timepieces as can be seen in the ancient sconce clock from 16th century Germany. Perhaps even more strangely, modern clock-makers also frequently refer back to the gothic tradition.

Then again, it may provide you with misleading information. For instance, an original paper label may have been taken from a clock perhaps one in poor condition and affixed inside another in an attempt to make the second clock seem more valuable or to lend an air of authenticity.

Reproductions of old labels are also available for purchase from a number of sources. A reputable dealer will tell a buyer if a label is a reproduction. But the dealer himself may not know or investigate too closely , and there are, of course, some sellers who deliberately attempt to mislead buyers.
