The thirtieth anniversary appears as good a time as ever to do a bit of reminiscing An early afternoon in late-September I heaved a sigh of relief. It had been a close call. Instead it went almost immediately from the production line i. After eight years of watching football on a Saturday afternoon, I’d decided it might be nice to start playing again and so I’d signed East Riding County League forms for my local village club, Easington United.

Jul 17,  · (This post was originally posted on the Coronation Street Blog June , reposted to this blog with permission.) There’s a long interview with Jane Danson, who plays Leanne Barlow, over at Digital Spy today. It’s one of those interviews with lots of words in it – .

The Clock, an Icicle, Dislocation of Time To his great astonishment the heavy bell went on from six to seven, and from seven to eight, and regularly up to twelve; then stopped. It was past two when he went to bed. The clock was wrong. An icicle must have got into the works. This little paragraph highlights something that has always fascinated me about A Christmas Carol.

There seems to be some sort of dislocation of time that happens throughout the course of the novel. When Jacob Marley predicts the arrival of the three Ghosts of Christmas to Scrooge, Marley says that the phantoms will appear on three consecutive nights. When Scrooge wakes up for the Ghost of Christmas Past, he becomes completely disoriented with time because it appears he has slept through an entire day into the night.

This time warp never gets that much attention from anybody. Readers prefer to focus on the more ghostly elements of the story. Time warps are the thing of science fiction and fantasy. Scrooge is not Luke Skywalker or James T. Even the twelve nights of Christmas are compressed into a single evening by the Ghost of Christmas Present.

Sneaking around spying on Dennis, his phone, following him and he caught him with his ex, Norma and tattled on him to Rita. Never mind that Norma had a good reason for seeing Dennis and he was supporting her. Yes, Dennis should have trusted Rita to be understanding but you know, Dennis has been ducking and diving all his life. I’m sure it’s second nature to him. And No, Norris had no business trying to find out from Dennis what happened the next day.

At work in a deep wet hole, he had recklessly omitted to slab the walls of a drive; uprights and tailors yielded under the lateral pressure, and the rotten earth collapsed, bringing down the roof in its train. The digger fell forward on his face, his ribs jammed across his pick, his arms pinned to his sides, nose and mouth pressed into the sticky mud as into a mask; and over his defenceless body, with a roar that burst his ear-drums, broke stupendous masses of earth.

His mates at the windlass went staggering back from the belch of violently discharged air: Their shouts drawing no response, the younger and nimbler of the two—he was a mere boy, for all his amazing growth of beard—put his foot in the bucket and went down on the rope, kicking off the sides of the shaft with his free foot.

A group of diggers, gathering round the pit-head, waited for the tug at the rope. It was quick in coming; and the lad was hauled to the surface. The crowd melted with a “Poor Bill—God rest his soul! Such accidents were not infrequent; each man might thank his stars it was not he who lay cooling down below. And so, since no more washdirt would be raised from this hole, the party that worked it made off for the nearest grog-shop, to wet their throats to the memory of the dead, and to discuss future plans.

On hearing his mate’s report he had sunk heavily down on a log, and there he sat, a pannikin of raw spirit in his hand, the tears coursing ruts down cheeks scabby with yellow mud, his eyes glassy as marbles with those that had still to fall.

Thursday, June 14, HHH Modern Warfare Testing Session 1 I’ve been busy with creating my own set of rules that bridge the gap between a pure skirmish and mass combat, something that could handle a platoon or so of regular troops, with the possibility of mixing in character PC heroes and vehicles or other heavy-hitters. Tentatively named Heroes, Heavies, and Hordes, my system uses traditional d4-d20 numerical progression.

I’ve used these rules to play Modern Warfare: I started my first play-test with just the ‘hordes’ portion of the rules test, trying out the conventional ground combat to ensure that the basics work in this system before adding anything else. Before I can add superpowered characters, psionic powers, and suits of power armor to the mix, I need to make sure that it can handle modern ground combat.

It gave me mixed emotions as we headed into Christmas week – the money certainly helpful for a player out of contract at the end of the season, but I feared it would leave us a little short, and both Robbie and I agreed that we would need to look for cover at left back as a priority in January. If Durrell’s planned departure left pangs of regret, training on Wednesday brought devastation. Martin Rowlands stretched for a ball played just in front of him in a five-a-side session, but caught a stud in the turf.

The agony was obvious to all, and we called an early halt to the session whilst Gareth Law and I accompanied the Irishman to hospital. What we were told was genuinely awful news, made all the worse as it came two days before Christmas. At 36, and having been a key player for us since his arrival, Martin had severely damaged cruciate ligaments in his right knee – and would be out for at least a year.

The pain etched on his face was clear, and it wasn’t just physical. Nobody said anything, but we all knew it would likely be curtains for Martin’s career as a professional footballer. With Martin’s injury casting a shadow over everyone, and the fact that neither Robbie nor myself fancied it at all, Christmas Day training was cancelled, with everyone told to keep an eye on how much they consumed over the course of the day.

Domestically, with a home game on Boxing Day, it was a great affair, with two extremely excited children – and the arrival on Christmas Eve of both sets of grandparents to add yet more excitement to the house – in fact, the perfect tonic after what had been a dreadful couple of days at the club.

One quite enjoys the sleighing, however, as there was very little last month. Drove several miles down the valley, this morning, in the teeth of a sharp wind and flurries of snow, but after facing the cold bravely, one brings home a sort of virtuous glow which is not to be picked up by cowering over the fireside; it is with this as with more important matters, the effort brings its own reward.

Walking near the river saw three large waterfowl moving northward; we believed them to be loons; they were in sight only for a moment, owing to the trees above us, but we heard a loud howling cry as they flew past, like that of those birds.

The original journals of the field notes, from which the present narrative is compiled, were published, as each expedition ended, as parliamentary papers by the Government of the Colony of South Australia. The journals of the first two expeditions, formed a small book, which was distributed mostly to the patrons who had subscribed to the fund for my second expedition. The account of the third, found its way into the South Australian Observer, while the records of the fourth and fifth journeys remained as parliamentary documents, the whole never having appeared together.

Thus only fragments of the accounts of my wanderings became known; and though my name as an explorer has been heard of, both in Australia and England, yet very few people even in the Colonies are aware of what I have really done.

What are the Beardmore relics? The Beardmore relics are either a fraud – or a clue to one of the greatest adventures in Canadian history. Taken at face value, they tell a story years older than Columbus, of a band of Viking rovers who sailed through Hudson’s Strait and Hudson’s Bay, on into northern Ontario and almost to the Lakehead.

But their discovery has been so clouded by conflicting evidence and disagreement that it is difficult today to consider them more than a hoax. Sifting the evidence is like following a detective story.
